Landscape architect Gustafson Porter, designer of the Diana Memorial water feature in Hyde Park, has won a Greenwich Council competition to redesign two squares in central Woolwich as part of the town’s regeneration.

The winning team fought off competition from 39 entrants including Arup, Space Syntax and Square Gross Max, in the international design competition to revamp General Gordon Square and Beresford Square. Construction is scheduled to start in autumn 2009 and be completed by 2011.

The central feature for General Gordon Square will be a paddling area – in common with the Diana Memorial. However, paddling was banned shortly after the memorial opened, after three people slipped and fell.

The competition was run by Greenwich Council in partnership with Design for London. The project forms part of the mayor of London’s 100 Public Spaces Programme.

The firm is already an award winner, previously receiving a RIBA award for its design for Old Market Square in central Nottingham.
