Engineering giant Atkins has won a contract, covering design and engineering services, for more than 100 temporary Olympic structures, with architects due to be appointed at the end of this month.
Atkins will advise on building design, civil and structural engineering, acoustics, fire and accessibility for the competition venues including St James’ Park in Newcastle, Hampden Park in Glasgow, Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and those on the Olympic Park itself.
The company will also look at park infrastructure, the design of public highways, bridge structures and underpasses and gas, water, drainage, heating and cooling and electrical systems.
Mike McNicholas, the director of design and engineering solutions for Atkins and project director for Olympic work said ‘the temporary structures present a special challenge because we will be looking at creating amazing spaces that have the look and feel of the Olympics using a kit of products such as staging and seating’.
