Many professionals have trouble visualising a 3D structure from 2D plans and sections.
However, if they are shown a finished building on screen that they can “walk” through they can make design
changes or revisions for tens of pounds instead of hundreds or thousands.
With Autodesk’s Building Information Modelling (BIM), they can do exactly that.
Building Information Modelling is also flexible. Architects may not be able to visualise what they see on a mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawing, but if they have access to the 3D model file they can then import it into their own model and see exactly how it fits with the building.
BIM is still a young technology, but Revit building design software has been available for some years and is now widely used within the industry.
WSP is one of the world’s fastest-growing design, engineering and management consultancies. Based in the UK, and specialising in property, transport and environmental projects it works with clients to create built and natural environments for the future.
Since the beginning of 2008, WSP’s Structural BIM Improvement Manager, Richard Walsh, has been working to share knowledge and influence the development of Revit. By linking up the UK offices, with those overseas, teams are able to share information.
Walsh is convinced by the benefits of this collaboration: “There are huge efficiencies and financial gains to be made from sharing on fully co-ordinated 3D models across the design team from day one.”

Exterior renderings are a great way for Architects & Property Developers to show their plans fully developed.
Interior renderings bring concepts to life & allow designers to experiment with different ideas.
Our design professionals can also create stunning, fully detailed and textured 3D images of furniture models.
Video animations are virtual fly-bys or walk-throughs that can provide a clear understanding of the building
